Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) tiene treinta y nueva años, vive con su madre, Nancy (Mary Steenburgen), y suele conseguir empleos esporádicos. Dale Doback (John C. Reilly), es un desempleado terminal de cuarenta años que vive con su padre, Robert (Richard Jenkins). Cuando la madre de Brennan y el padre de Dale se casan, los hombres se ven obligados a compartir casa. El narcisismo de ambos y su vagancia agresiva en seguida los llevan a una competitividad que pone en peligro el matrimonio de Nancy y Robert. Los dos niños grandes malcriados planearán una estrategia loca para que sus padres vuelvan juntos.
